TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE · AUGUST 2, 2027

Total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027: where to see it

On the morning of Monday, August 2, 2027, the Moon's shadow crosses the Strait of Gibraltar, North Africa, Egypt and Arabia. Inside a band about 260 km wide the Sun is covered completely, for up to 6 minutes 23 seconds near Luxor in Egypt (NASA). Everywhere else in Europe, Africa and western Asia the eclipse is partial. Pick a place for its local times, the length of totality and how high the Sun will be.

Best places, by length of totality

The longest totality of the places on this page. The closer to the central line, the longer it lasts; the Nile valley around Luxor and Sohag is near the longest point of the whole eclipse.

Eye safety

  • Look at the partly eclipsed Sun only through eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer that meets the ISO 12312-2 standard. Ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe.
  • Only during totality, when the Moon covers the Sun completely and it goes dark, can you take the glasses off. Put them back on the moment the first bright edge of the Sun reappears.
  • Never look through a camera, binoculars or a telescope at the Sun, even with eclipse glasses on: those need their own solar filter fitted on the front.
  • Check the glasses before you use them and throw away any that are scratched, torn or damaged. Watch children while they use them.

From the guidance of NASA and the American Astronomical Society: NASA's eclipse safety page · The American Astronomical Society's list of safe viewers and filters.

Eclipse glasses

Buy them well before you travel, and check that they're labelled ISO 12312-2 and come from a maker or seller on the American Astronomical Society's list above.

How we work out the times

We compute every place ourselves from the positions of the Sun and Moon (the astronomy-engine library), for the place's own latitude, longitude and height, with NASA's Moon and Sun sizes and the Delta T NASA used for this eclipse (71.7 s). To check the method we computed the points on NASA's published central line: our totality lengths match NASA's to within 0.1 s at all 12 points.

Times are computed, not observed: check them before you travel. They come from our own calculation (astronomy-engine, the same Moon and Sun sizes and Delta T as NASA's predictions) and agree with NASA's published central-line durations to within a second, but they leave out the mountains and valleys on the Moon's edge (NASA: about 1 to 3 seconds of totality, and 1 to 3 km at the edges of the path), your exact spot in town and the weather.
