GOOGLE SHEETS ADD-ON

Surnamepick: Name Splitter

Turn a column of full names into mail-merge greetings (Dear Dr. Rivera, Hi Ana, Estimada Sra. Gómez) and title, first, middle, last and suffix columns.

What it does

Surnamepick gets a contact list ready for a mail merge: formal and informal greetings for every row, and every part of the name in its own column.

  • Formal and informal greetings for every row: "Dear Dr. Rivera" / "Hi Ana", "Dear John Smith" / "Hi Jack" (from a nickname), Spanish "Estimada Sra. Gómez" / "Hola Lucía".
  • Greetings come only from a title or credential (Dr., Sra., PhD…), never from guessing a gender from a first name. Choose what to use when there is no title: full name, last name or first name.
  • The parts in their own columns: title, first, middle, last, suffix, nickname. Reads "Last, First", quoted nicknames, particles (van der, de la), two Spanish surnames and ALL CAPS.
  • Optional live greeting formula column, built from the title, first and last cells, so fixing a part updates the greeting.
  • Detects a header row; writes new columns beside your data without overwriting anything.

For mail merges, newsletters, event lists and CRM imports.

How to use it

  1. Install Surnamepick: Name Splitter from the Google Workspace Marketplace (in Google Sheets: Extensions › Add-ons › Get add-ons, then search for Surnamepick).
  2. In your spreadsheet, choose Extensions › Surnamepick: Name Splitter › Open Surnamepick. The sidebar opens on the right.
  3. Select a column of full names (Dr. Ana María Rivera · Smith, John "Jack" · Sr. Luis Pérez García), then run. You get formal and informal greetings for mail merges, then title, first, middle, last, suffix and nickname, in new columns to the right.
  4. Press Make greetings and name parts in the sidebar, or choose Extensions › Surnamepick: Name Splitter › Make greetings from selected names.
  5. The new columns: Formal greeting, Informal greeting, Title, First name, Middle name, Last name, Suffix, Nickname. Nothing in your own columns is changed.
  6. Bought a license? Choose Extensions › Surnamepick: Name Splitter › License key and paste it in (the Show button reveals what you typed).

Permissions, in plain words

When you install Surnamepick, Google asks you to allow three things:

  • spreadsheets.currentonly: See and change only the spreadsheet you open the add-on in, so it can read the cells you select and write its results in new columns. It can't open, list or read any of your other files.
  • script.container.ui: Show its menu under Extensions and its sidebar inside Google Sheets.
  • script.external_request: Connect to one outside address, sheets-api.fitztoppicks.com (our own service), to check the free allowance and the license and, for most add-ons, to answer the rows you run. Google Sheets only lets the add-on call that one address.

That's all. It never sees your email address, contacts, Gmail or other Drive files, and the only outside address it calls is sheets-api.fitztoppicks.com.

Privacy

  • The names in the rows you run are sent over HTTPS to sheets-api.fitztoppicks.com only to answer them, and are never stored.
  • To count the free allowance, our service keeps only scrambled codes (keyed hashes) and numbers: never your email address, your name or the text of your cells.
  • Your license key is saved in your own Google account's settings for the add-on, and checked with Gumroad, where you bought it.
  • No ads, no trackers, nothing sold or shared.
