NES model numbers: which one do you have?

Where the model number is

Turn the console over: the model number is on the label underneath, usually next to the serial number.

How to read it

NES consoles read NES-001 (the original front loader) or NES-101 (the 1993 top loader). Other NES- codes are accessories.

Not sure? Type the number into the finder.

NES-001 (front loader)

Label: NES-001 · Made 1985–1995

What's different: The original front-loading NES. It has the 10NES lockout chip and both RF and AV (composite) outputs; the cartridge goes into a spring-loaded connector that wears with use.

Parts and cables: Replacement 72-pin connectors are sold for the front loader only; search for listings that name NES-001.

NES-101 (top loader)

Label: NES-101 · Made 1993–1995

What's different: The 1993 redesign: cartridges load from the top, the lockout chip is gone and there's no AV output, only RF.

Parts and cables: Search for listings that name your model number, and check the photos match your console.

Before you buy, check that the listing names your exact model number and that its photos match your console. The notes here are general guidance written by us, not a promise that a part fits.
