PlayStation 2 model numbers: which one do you have?

Where the model number is

Turn the console over: the model number is on the label underneath, usually next to the serial number.

How to read it

PlayStation 2 consoles read SCPH- and five digits. The first digits give the model (3xxxx and 5xxxx are fat, 7xxxx and 9xxxx slim); the last digit is only the region (1 is North America).

Not sure? Type the number into the finder.

Fat, Japan only (SCPH-10000, 15000, 18000)

Label: SCPH-10000, SCPH-15000, SCPH-18000 · Made 2000–2001

What's different: The first Japanese models, with a PCMCIA slot instead of the expansion bay; the two launch models play DVDs only through software on a memory card.

Parts and cables: Search for listings that name your model number, and check the photos match your console.

Fat (SCPH-3xxxx, 5xxxx)

Made 2000–2004

What's different: The original case with a disc tray, an internal power supply and an expansion bay for a hard drive and the network adaptor. From SCPH-500xx the i.LINK port is gone and an infrared receiver for a DVD remote is built in.

Parts and cables: Fat models take a figure-8 mains cable, not an adapter brick; for lasers and trays, search for listings that name your SCPH number.

Slim (SCPH-7xxxx)

Made 2004–2007

What's different: The 2004 slimline case with a top-opening lid. There's no expansion bay (no internal hard drive), and power comes from an external adapter. Some adapters made from August to December 2004 were found to overheat.

Parts and cables: Use an adapter listed for the slim PS2 with the same voltage and plug; lasers changed between slim revisions, so match your SCPH number.

Slim (SCPH-9xxxx)

Made 2007–2013

What's different: The last slim revision (2007 on): the power supply moved back inside the console, so it takes a mains cable instead of an adapter.

Parts and cables: It doesn't use the SCPH-7xxxx adapter; search for listings that name SCPH-9xxxx.

Before you buy, check that the listing names your exact model number and that its photos match your console. The notes here are general guidance written by us, not a promise that a part fits.
